Municipal history
Aglantzia was proclaimed a Municipality, following a referendum, in May 1986. Aglantzia’s Municipality, is adjacent to Nicosia’s Municipality, capital city of Cyprus. Is an acritic (front line) municipality with an area of thirty-one square kilometres, fourteen of which is an agricultural, (occupied by the Turkish troops since 1974).
In the first Municipal elections, that Aglantzia participated, in 1985, Andreas Petrou was elected Mayor, who was re-elected for a number of years up to 2011, and was leader of the Council of the Municipality.
During this period, in a spirit of cooperation and conciliation and with the unique aim of the progress and the development of the Municipality, the Mayor and the Municipal Council managed to achieve important work that changed the face of Aglantzia.
The members of the Municipal Council were increased to sixteen in 2007, according the increase of population.
The work and the activities of the Municipality is the result of the collective effort of the people of the Local Government and mark the progress and the development of our city. In the same framework, the new Mayor and the newly-elected Council of the Municipality are developing their actions.
Today, following the tragic cuts of the state grant, Aglantzia’s Municipality employs only twenty six permanent administrative personnel, forty six permanent and approximately three seasonal workers, who are working hard and with zeal for the services that are based at the Town Hall.
